Whistler, BC restaurant: The Chinese Bistro

  Got a craving for Chinese?

Now Whistler residents can feed their passion (and stomachs) at the newest restaurant to hit town –
The Chinese Bistro.

GM Ronald Wong takes pride in serving the community with the only authentic restaurant of its kind. You can see it in his cheek-to-cheek smiles, which are incredibly contagious.

Of course, traditional Chinese classics are served - such as dim sum, wonton noodle soup and spring rolls. But it’s the vast selection of other unique dishes that caught my eye. There are nearly two-hundred menu options to choose from!

Our picks:

#10 – Chicken and Jellyfish Salad:

Prepared Cantonese-style with carrot, lettuce, then drizzled with sesame oil and garnished with cilantro. The diced chicken was moist and full of flavour. The see-through jellyfish tasted like a crunchier version of calamari. Now I can add it to the list of unusual food I’ve tried!

#60 – Sauteed Oysters:

Plenty of them are served in this dish with onion, ginger and green peppers. I’d say they’re only for those who are crazy about oysters, as they are the thickest and meatiest ones I’ve ever tried. Talk about an aphrodisiac!

#76 – Crispy Prawns in Rock Salt & Chili Pepper:

It’s always good to order something you know you’re going to like amidst other, more risky, options. For me, that staple is anything ‘prawn’ and anything ‘chili pepper’.  I’d definitely recommend these prawns for the spice lovers. The fried sliced garlic chips add to the crunch, too. Wash them down with a sip of Singha or Tsing Tao beer for a refreshing after taste.

#110 – Roasted Peking Duck with Pancakes & Scallion:

This is one of their most popular dishes and it’s easy to see why. The duck is served hot, crispy and ready-to-roll. Literally, though. It comes with green onion (scallions), a thick hoisin sauce and homemade crepes for you to roll it all up in. In between bites, you can nibble on the shrimp chips that are on the side. Delish!

#131 – Crispy Rice with Assorted Seafood:

Not to be confused with fried rice, this crispy rice crackles when you take a bite. It’s presented in a bowl by itself, then your server comes over and pours steaming hot broth into it. The flavourful broth includes baby corn, mushrooms, peas, shrimp and scallops. If you can’t finish it all, it’ll make a fantastic lunch the next day.
